West Haven Board of Education Hosts Dedication Event for the Pamela Bellmore Gardner Memorial Lecture Hall

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - On Monday, March 4, 2024, the West Haven Board of Education honored the late Pamela Gardner, former West Haven High School Principal, with a beautiful dedication to the high school’s newest addition, the ‘Pamela Bellmore Gardner Memorial Lecture Hall.’

The event began with the Master of Ceremonies, Superintendent Neil C. Cavallaro, addressing the crowd of 100-plus in the lobby of WHHS. Superintendent Cavallaro noted that the lecture hall was something Pam thought could benefit all students and her teaching staff, and that it would be open to the community for meetings and gatherings as well.

“It will be a routine part of the academic program for any student that attends West Haven High School beginning now and well into the future,” he added.

"Planning stages, academic offerings, and the construction for this school took place for over the better part of 10 years,” continued Superintendent Cavallaro. “Pam's fingerprints are all over this state-of-the-art building. She always believed a lecture hall was a critical part of the project."

As he wrapped up his opening remarks, Superintendent Cavallaro asked the guests to take a moment and reflect on the opportunities that our students now have at their disposal, and to know that none of it would have been possible without Pam’s leadership, vision, and belief that no students who attend West Haven High School should have to settle for anything less than the best. 

Following the Superintendent’s comments, the crowd heard from guest speakers Cebi Waterfied (Chairwoman for the Board of Education), Honorable Mayor Dorinda Borer, and WHHS Principal Dana Paredes, respectively.

"Pam was more than just a teacher,” said Cebi. “She was a beacon of inspiration, a guiding light for countless students who passed through these halls. Her unwavering dedication to education, her passion for learning, and her boundless enthusiasm touched the lives of all who had the ability to know her."

Later, she added, "In dedicating this lecture hall to Pam Gardner, we pay tribute to her enduring spirit and her commitment to excellence in education. This space will serve as a lasting reminder of her contributions to our school, and as an inspiration for a generation of students to come.

“But behind the physical space that bears her name, it's Pam's ideals and values that we seek to honor today. She believed in the power of education to transform lives, to open doors of opportunity, and to foster a sense of community and belonging. She instilled in her students a love of learning, a thirst for knowledge, and a belief in their own potential to make a difference in the world.”

Cebi wrapped up her speech by saying, “May the Pamela Bellmore Gardner Lecture Hall serve as a fitting tribute to a remarkable educator and a beloved member of our school community. May it stand as a testament to her legacy, and as a reminder of the profound impact that one individual could have on the lives of others."

As Cebi concluded her remarks, Superintendent Cavallaro introduced Mayor Borer.

"Today, we celebrate the beautiful lecture hall, a state-of-the-art facility that all will enjoy, but we also celebrate the woman who was a very proud mom, a great daughter, a great wife, and a great friend," said Mayor Borer.

"Pam was very humble, she didn't like to take credit for anything. She was the woman behind the scenes, and she always made sure that everything she worked on, not only provided a great quality of education for the youth of our city but also, she wanted to empower our community. 

 “So this dream of a lecture hall was for our students, but she wanted the community to access it as well, because she wanted everyone to enjoy what our education system has to offer."

WHHS Principal Dana Parades then stepped to the podium. "Pam was not just a Principal, she was the heart and soul of West Haven High School. Her commitment to the students, staff, and community was unparalleled."

She concluded with, "This lecture hall will not only serve as a physical space for learning, but also as a symbol of Pam's enduring spirit, her dedication to excellence, and her unwavering belief in the power of education."

After the speeches, the crowd listened to a musical presentation by Pam’s cousin Mark Denny, as well as Phyllis Silver on the piano, as they performed “Beautiful City” by Godspell, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.

Superintendent Cavallaro then presented a plague to Pam’s husband, Scott, and her daughter, Mackenzie. Together, the two unveiled the plaque, which will be displayed outside the lecture hall.

After the dedication, guests in attendance were provided refreshments as they toured the incredible new space, which seats 84 people and has a capacity of 110.
