At West Haven High School, Sophie Mazuroski shines as the captain of the Girls Varsity Tennis Team, playing in the #1 singles position. Her favorite memory this season was celebrating the team's first win against East Haven and witnessing her teammates achieve their first individual victories. Reflecting on her leadership journey, Sophie shared, “While being a captain my junior and senior year, I've learned how to take on a strong leadership role and successfully guide my teammates towards improvement. I’ve mostly learned how to bring a team together and help strengthen the bond between us.”
Off the court, Sophie takes pride in her academic achievements, stating, “I make an effort to demonstrate hard work and perseverance while on the court and in the classroom.” After graduating from West Haven High School, she plans to attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to major in Environmental Engineering. Sophie credits her mother as her greatest influence, saying, “She’s my guaranteed biggest supporter. I hope to be as hardworking as she is one day.”
Christian Mullins is another standout athlete, representing West Haven in Track and Field as a captain. He participates in hurdles, jumps, and sprints. This season, Christian's favorite memory was beating his personal record in the 300-meter hurdles and triple jump at the first meet. He noted, “I've learned how to be a better leader by becoming a captain.”
Outside of athletics, Christian is proud of his work ethic, emphasizing the importance of dedication both on and off the track. After high school, he will attend Wagner College in the fall, majoring in Health Sciences while on the Pre-Med track. He will also be a member of their Track and Field team. Christian acknowledges his best friend Giana as a significant influence in his life, stating, “She has helped me become the person I am today by always encouraging me and pushing me to be my best.”
Sophie and Christian truly exemplify the spirit of student-athletes, seamlessly intertwining their academic pursuits with their love for sports. We look forward to following their journeys and celebrating their achievements as they continue to represent West Haven High School with pride.
